North Carolina has officially secured $213,008,356 in Year 1 funding through the Rural Health Transformation Program (RHTP). This award is part of the national $50 billion investment to strengthen rural health care, with funding released annually from 2026 through 2030.
This funding will support 85 rural counties and nearly 3 million residents through targeted investments in:
- Expansion of behavioral health access
- Rural workforce recruitment and retention pathways
- Chronic disease and primary care capacity
- Value-based and team-based care models
- Technology upgrades, telehealth, and interoperability
- NC ROOTS Hubs to connect medical, behavioral, and social services
Implementation will advance through a statewide governance structure and regional hubs, led by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, with collaboration from rural providers, community partners, academic institutions, and the private sector.
