In the United States, one in eleven Americans relies on a community health center for healthcare. In 2022, these centers catered to over 30 million patients, yet over 100 million Americans still lack access to primary care. This raises the question: How can health centers further their mission of health equity to enhance and broaden their services nationwide?
Dr. Kyu Rhee, President and CEO of the National Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC), outlines three key objectives for Community Health Centers.
1. Be the Provider of Choice
To become the preferred healthcare provider, Dr. Rhee suggests health centers should emphasize the UDS (soon to be UDS+), Stars Ratings, and Medicaid Managed Care. He also feels strongly that health centers will need to begin taking risks, saying, “We will have to take risks to be leaders in value-based care.” Dr. Rhee goes on to explain that health centers will need to work collaboratively, using their collective commitment to health equity and primary care as a unifying force.
2. Be the Employer of Choice
CHCs must be innovative in finding ways to retain and grow their workforce. While a mission-driven approach is fundamental, Dr. Rhee advises that health centers should offer roles that transcend patient care. This includes dedicating time to patient education, scientific research, and exploring other fields, making the jobs more multifaceted and fulfilling.
3. Be the Partner of Choice
Understanding the intricacies of the health system is crucial for CHCs wanting to be ideal partners. Knowledge about financial flows and data management is key. Dr. Rhee suggests seeking long-term partnerships, spanning 5 to 15 years, that are as consistent as the continuum of primary care. These partnerships should extend across private, public, and non-profit sectors, promoting a well-rounded approach.
As CHCs continue to champion health equity, Dr. Rhee’s guidelines offer a roadmap for broadening their impact and services.
